Hampshire embodies a mixture of quaint rural towns and villages, and considerably large urban centres, with a vibrant history. It has transport connections and attracts thousands of visitors a year for its many attractions.

Portsmouth and Southampton are the largest settlements, each with their own administrative authorities separate to Hampshire County Council, and with important roles for the UK’s military and trade respectively. Other major towns include Winchester, Farnborough and Petersfield. As a whole, the county is very affluent economically, with many large firms based in the region.
